E Mail

How long will Email last as the preferred medium of communication ?
the new generation of userrs and the older generation of authors and consultants who have become rich and famous would like us to believe that the younger "net" generation would rather "instant Message" or chat or twitter or scrap rather than email.
Dont know how much of this is true ?

Boss,

Here is my view.

Digital Natives ("Net" generation - below 25) love IM, Twitter, Blog, etc. They are also brave (due to their age) and not yet seriously faced identity theft and share almost everything in public domain. So they just play with all soft toys and continue with the ones convenient to them. Another advantage is they allow online / offline collaboration in an intuitive and organized manner, much better than Emails. So they read emails just once or twice a day, but reply on IM almost instantly.

Wholehearted Digital immigrants would continue to love emails and carefully use IM, Blog, Twitter in a calibrated way.

Reluctant digital immigrants would stick to Email, by and large.

I expect converging technologies to emerge and allow people to work with their own set of tools to send, receive, share and collaborate. This is already happening slowly.

Mashup and search technologies would enable this convergence in the first stage.

In the second stage, Messaging applications / News Reader will allow users to tag and organise the information (from multiple channels) in the ways they like.
